I'm thankful for so many things today. I'm thankful for my love and our wonderful relaxing evening together and a whole day today. I'm thankful for our 3 wonderful kitties, even when they drive me insane. I'm thankful for my family - my new-ish family and my old one.
I'm thankful for our new little apartment in Providence and that I love being a psychiatrist. I'm thankful for Red Stripe, especially their frites, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, and lemon drop martinis. I'm thankful that I love Providence, and that it's starting to feel like home. I'm thankful for all of my colleagues - wonderful people working alongside of me makes even the most awful days bearable (this I learned in graduate school).
I'm thankful for Cape Cod and Mattapoisett. When Kath and I drive out there on random weekends, as soon as we get to Mattapoisett, everything work-related just goes away. It's magical.
I'm thankful for red slippers, down comforters, and coffee. I'm thankful for lazy mornings when I can sip my coffee over 2 hours. I'm thankful for long, drawn-out autumn weather and my walk to work in the morning.
I'm thankful for the life that I've been given and the life ahead of me.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

I know what I'll feel like in 50 years.
I had a training session yesterday for the first time in 6 weeks. Well, not that I've been completely inactive for the last 6 weeks... I have been walking to and from work every day, which is at least 1.5 miles each way... for one month it was probably 2.5 miles each way. But, needless to say, I haven't exactly been exerting myself... (although that hill coming up Steeple Street probably is a 7% grade and boy do my thighs burn at the top).
But anyway, yesterday I finally had a training session (Kath and I had each signed up for 3 half-hour sessions for the low-low price of ~$30 when we joined our gym), and my trainer ran into Kath and I sitting outside of Starbucks the other night, so I could no longer avoid her.
I think she got back at me yesterday for avoiding all of her phone calls for the past month.
It felt rather mild at the time. I mean, I was able to complete each aspect of the workout with some straining and groaning, but no significant pain. I was huffing and puffing at the end, and I did find myself running to the water fountain several times (which I never do... because I don't like plain water, as I told her), but overall I felt pretty good.
This morning I woke up and found that I was in almost exactly the same position in which I had fallen asleep.
I think it's because my body was in too much pain even in sleep. I've been limping around like a 100-year old woman today. Every muscle and tendon in my body is in pain. I cough, and I groan. I lean forward, and I groan. A kitty jumps on my lap, and I groan.
Katherine has been laughing at me, because even shifting positions on the couch is a big production. Doggone it, I just want to slouch down in my seat, but even that is painful to pull off.
I had better put in some time at the gym this week. I need to make some progress before next Monday. This past Sunday's session was only 30 minutes. My next one will be 1 hour long.
If you don't hear from me after that, I imagine I will be unable to even lift a finger to type.

It's not like it's a choice between chicken or fish...
The State of Virginia executed the sniper in the 2002 shooting spree today (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/11/us/11sniper.html).
Apparently the State of Virginia gives one the option of choosing one's execution method: lethal injection or electric chair.
How does that work?
Does one circle one's choice?
Does the State have a form with "Pros" and "Cons" for each?
If the whole practice weren't already so abhorrent, it has become even more so.

Fighting off SAD
I love the day after the time changes in the fall. But I hate, hate, hate how it is dark at 5pm, when I am heading home from the hospital. It's especially worse this year, with the shift to the Eastern Time Zone. I'm wondering if we should get one of those UV lights to ward off the winter blues. Especially since I will be starting Medicine this month and will not even get the sunlight in the morning when my days will begin at 5 am....
I lost a bet with Katherine, so I am making dinner tonight. Roast chicken with mashed sweet and regular potatoes and salad. Not a bad bet to lose, because, really, we both win. I was just mad that I lost. I never lose bets with her.
We made a quick weekend trip up to Vermont to visit Katherine's grandmother. She had a stroke in September, and we had last seen her two weeks prior to the stroke, at a family wedding. It was wonderful to see her, and although she can't communicate well, it was clear that she still enjoys seeing family. One thing I love about Katherine is how family-oriented she is - she shares this trait with her Memere.
I'm looking forward to this weekend - an entire weekend at home. I plan on baking and cooking and discovering downtown Providence and any cute shops that exist in that section of town. I'm trying to relish the relaxing moments left this month before I start the long haul that will be Medicine.
